Landscapes as constructed surfaces

The landscapes of Margot de Jager are constructed and therefore they demonstrate a strong affinity to the also constructed Dutch polder landscape. Nevertheless she doesn’t have a specific landscape in mind; the elements of a panoramic view, the light and the role the horizon plays inspire her. That is why you might call her work typically Dutch. The spectator combines his personal associations and landscape experiences to the indeterminateness of the painted landscape. Consequently an abundance of possible interpretations come into being. Her big panoramic landscapes with straight lines seem to absorb the spectator in the landscape. Although she doesn’t search for the Sublime in nature, her recent paintings are quiet and silent and come close to the contemplative.
